In the tradition of European economy cars, the Fiat 500 had always been very small. But in 1960, Fiat decided to make this classic car more spacious and comfortable, while retaining its compact profile and smart styling. Two body styles were offered: a convertible and a sedan with an ample sunroof. And a special "Sport" model delivered 21 bph and a top speed of 65 mph, making it the fastest Fiat 500. In the 60's the Fiat 500 was greeted with rave reviews by two of the most influential members of the motoring press. Bill Boddy, writing in Motor Sport, called attention to the car's finer points, including road holding and brakes. Michael Sedgwick said the new Fiat was a car apart, comparing its performance to that of a classic 1920s sporting car.
